What Mulam does
You set it up once. It runs itself after that.
- You send them a link. It takes about two minutes, and they don’t need a password to join.
- Mulam asks them about their life. One question every morning at 9, about their own childhood, people, places and lessons.
- They answer, and the whole family hears it. By voice, photo or writing. Children and grandchildren can listen, react and ask more.
Their answers don’t just sit in a feed. On the grandparent’s side they become games made from their own life (Memory Match, Story Quiz, Photo Puzzle and Ask & Answer), where every round asks them to recall a face, a place or a name. Grandchildren get culture games of their own (Naam Jaap, Mythology Match and Ask & Answer), something to come back for and then go and ask their grandparent about.
Why we built it
When families live far apart, the weekly call fills up with weather, health and logistics, and a parent’s days can go quiet. Meanwhile the stories that only they can tell are fading: about 15% of childhood memories are lost every decade. Most of them are never told, because nobody thought to ask.
There is a health reason too. A 2024 analysis of studies covering more than 600,000 people found that people who feel lonely have a 31% higher risk of dementia (Luchetti et al., Nature Mental Health, 2024). Mulam gives your parent a reason to remember out loud and talk with family every day. It isn’t a medical product, and it doesn’t claim to prevent or treat dementia.
Why “Mulam”
Mūlam (मूलम्) means “root” in Sanskrit: the part of a tree you don’t see, which holds everything else up. Parents and grandparents are a family’s roots, and their stories are how the rest of us know where we come from. That’s also why our home is mulamroots.com.
